Raw sewage has been spotted leaking into the sea opposite St Paul’s Island in St Paul’s Bay, caused by this week’s road collapse in the locality.

Photos sent to Lovin Malta show the sea turning into a murky brown as sewage seeps out into the area due to damage to wastewater mains.

The photos were taken by a passerby who was next to Il-Bajja tax-Xama, along Triq l-Iskola, an area that is known for drainage leaks.

Lovin Malta informed the Water Services Corporation about the sewage leak, which provided the newsroom with a comment on the matter.

“The collapse of part of the road in Triq Ix-Xagħra tal-Bandieri, St Paul’s Bay on 1st December resulted in extensive damage to wastewater mains operated by the Water Services Corporation, as well as damage to a residential block.”

“The Water Services Corporation has no connection to the cause of the collapse, however, its sewage infrastructure in the area was affected. The site was immediately secured and access to it was closed off, while residents in the vicinity were evacuated.”

“The Corporation immediately intervened in the situation to assess the damage done, and hand in hand with the Environment and Resources Authority and Infrastructure Malta ensured that the safety and well-being of residents in the area were safeguarded and that additional damage to the surroundings was minimised to the greatest extent possible.”

“WSC personnel were involved in cleaning the sewage which flowed into residential homes due to the collapse and remains ready to provide any other additional assistance in this regard as may be required.”

“As a consequence of the collapse and the damage caused to WSC infrastructure, sewage also overflowed into the sea. The Corporation and ERA are working closely to limit as much as possible any environmental damage in this regard.”

“The Corporation together with Infrastructure Malta will be installing a temporary by-pass which will stop more sewage from overflowing into the bay and will allow part of the road to be re-opened as a temporary measure, pending the repair of the damage caused to the road and sewage infrastructure, which as mentioned, is substantial.”

“The said emergency works should be completed by early next week.”
