Watch: ‘They Took Our Home’ – Mosta Birds Disoriented After Beloved Trees Were Removed From Square
A heartbreaking video captures birds in Mosta disoriented as they search for their former homes in trees which were removed earlier that morning.
Birdlife Malta released a statement yesterday condemning the removal and destruction of the ficus trees, an action which was approved by ERA -Environment& Resources Authority.
The statement was echoed by many others who also appealed for a halt to the works.
Liston Bongailas shared footage showing the birds trying to roost on trees near the Mosta Rotunda, visibly confused by the changes.
“They took our home, our shelter and our comfort,” Bongailas wrote in a poem shared on Facebook alongside the footage.

“We ended up in chaos and everyone is outside and desperate,” Bongailas added.
“Where will we go now? They took every place from us even in the valleys. Let’s all scream together maybe someone will hear us, maybe one day we will return with our family in our home,” Bongailas ended his post.
ERA stated yesterday that the works are part of the Mosta Square regeneration project. The authority explained that the trees would be transplanted to the Santa Margerita area in Mosta and that replacement trees, including Holm Oaks and Judas Trees, would be planted.
