A video of a large truck dumping ‘construction waste’ in Iklin has raised the ire of local residents.

“It is the result of the way the country is run. Impunity reigns supreme. I am so angry at my country that all the words I can think of fail short of describing my anger,” one Iklin resident told Lovin Malta.

The dumping has been occurring in fields in the lower part of Triq il-Wied, fields that are described as ‘virgin’ by the locals.

The video, which was taken today, shows dumping that “has been happening all this week”.

The Iklin local council has told residents it was aware of the dumping, and that two villas were being built in that area.

While the villas had permits, one councillor noted that the trucks “can’t just dump as they wish; it’s unacceptable, both the dirt and the lack of seriousness.”

“This is definitely not part of the building process; It’s just waste dumping material that’s been brought by trucks from another site,” ended the resident.

Since the video was published, ERA have investigated the site and confirmed that everything is being done according to the law

“Investigations resulted in the fact that the site in question is privately owned and that the stones shown in the footage have been deposited within the property. The site is covered by a development permit,” an ERA representative told Lovin Malta.

Another person with knowledge about the development also clarified the situation.

The site in question in covered by a permit for the construction of two fully detached villas (PA/05560/17). This permit also includes for the construction on surrounding walls that are to be constructed in the traditional rubble wall method. The material is clean stone material that will be used for the construction of these perimeter rubble walls,” the person confirmed.
