Watch: Żibel Discover Horrific Amount Of Plastic Trapped At St Peter’s Pool

Żibel has discovered and removed a horrific amount of sea plastic, this time from St Peter’s Pool in Marsaxlokk.

World Clean-up Week is currently underway, and as if they weren’t already doing enough, their operations have even increased to commemorate the week.

“This was our St Peter’s Pool clean-up in collaboration with the Marsaxlokk Local Council,” Żibel said.

“The plastic trapped in the cave are a result of fragments that were floating around in the Mediterranean sea that eventually get washed up and trapped into crevices, or other catchment zones,” Żibel founder Andrew Schembri told Lovin Malta.

“The bottles on the other hand were all heavily degraded, so they could be a mixture of either plastic washed in from the Mediterranean and got trapped or it’s plastic that had fallen in St Peter’s Pool and slowly degraded over time. The area is often affected by storms so it’s hard to point at the origin of this plastic,” he explained.

“For example, the hair bands that we found, around 40 in total, are clearly from the area since we don’t really find them in other places. The pieces of the speargun also seemed to be local, as well as the apple watch.”

During the clean-up, a number of divers went underwater to remove the plastic that was trapped in the area’s seabed.

“Amazing to see how the natural elements come together to trap plastic in such a small bay. Aside from very degraded plastic bottles, we also found an Apple Watch, necklaces, earrings, pieces of a harpoon gun and lots of hair bands,” Żibel said on social media.

Żibel is currently carrying out a series of clean-ups as part of World Clean-Up Week, so stay tuned to see what else they discover!

Well done Żibel
