With Santa Venera’s Police Next To Use E-Bikes, Rota Commends Move Towards Sustainability

Local environmental NGO Rota has commended the Santa Venera Police’s move towards making use of sustainable transport methods such as e-bikes for patrolling.

This comes after the Santa Venera Police Force and the local council signed a Memorandum of Understanding to fund the purchase of e-bikes for use by the community police of the locality.

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà said that what started as a pilot project in 2019, with the introduction of Community Police in Mellieħa, has now spread to most localities around Malta and Gozo.

“Rota is happy to see more localities taking on the concept of community policing on bicycles. Bicycles are a very efficient way of getting around, especially within villages,” Rota president Daniel Vella told Lovin Malta.

“It is much easier and faster to get to places which are not as accessible by car, such as alleyways. Police making use of bicycles are contributing to less congestion on the roads, better health whilst doing their job, and get to first-hand experience Maltese roads on bicycles,” he explained.

“This step is crucial for policemen to comprehend exactly any struggles citizens encounter, especially when these struggles escalate to reports at the police station.”

He also added that through this, the police can in turn provide organisations and other relevant entities with feedback on what can be improved within localities to make them more bicycle-friendly.

“Finally, people look up to the police, especially children, and this is an easy way to set a great example for generations to come,” he said.

The Mayor of Santa Venera Stephen Sultana praised the work being done by the team of community police in Santa Venera and said their presence is being felt.

He said that the Local Council decided to invest in the purchase of an ‘E-Bike’ because it felt that this was a sound investment, and will help the Community Police be more visible around Santa Venera.

This year, this service will be extended to more locations and to the end of the year 2023, will cover all localities across the country.
