Xjenza Malta (XM) and Malta Enterprise (ME) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that’s all about making research, development, and innovation in Malta easier, stronger, and more impactful.

The new agreement creates a framework for the two government agencies to work hand in hand, aligning funding schemes, cutting out unnecessary hurdles, and making sure that local research doesn’t just stay in labs but makes it all the way to the market.

That means better support for business planning, intellectual property protection, and access to commercial opportunities. The partnership also promises smarter sharing of technical resources to evaluate proposals more effectively, along with joint outreach campaigns to attract investment and position Malta as a hub for innovation.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, said: “Through this agreement, we are simplifying processes and fostering greater synergy between our national entities. This is a clear example of government acting as an enabler, removing unnecessary hurdles and ensuring that our institutions work together in the national interest, so that innovative ideas can be transformed into opportunities for our economy and society.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, added:
“Collaboration between industry, government, and education institutions is key to nurturing talent and innovation, and this MoU paves the way for impactful research initiatives that benefit the wider community.”

Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta, described the MoU as “a vital step toward building a more cohesive and efficient innovation ecosystem in Malta, enabling researchers and businesses to bring ideas to market faster and with greater support.”

Meanwhile, George Gregory, CEO of Malta Enterprise, commented: “We are proud to partner with Xjenza Malta in this initiative. By joining forces, we can accelerate innovation, unlock new opportunities for local talent, and reinforce Malta’s position as a thriving hub for research and enterprise.”

The agreement will run for two years (with the option to renew), during which both sides have committed to regular communication, monthly updates, and annual reviews to track progress.

All in all, the partnership is being hailed as a major step forward in strengthening Malta’s research and innovation ecosystem, helping local talent and businesses turn bold ideas into market-ready solutions.
