Maltese NGO Żibel reached a massive milestone in Malta’s fight against pollution, with 200,000 kilograms of debris and litter having been cleared from bays, seabeds and shorelines since 2017.

Their current total weight = 200,929.74 KGs

The record was hit last Saturday during a clean-up at Xemxija Bay, with volunteers gathering rubbish that adds to the staggering total.

Some eye-opening stats from the 200-tonne mark:

  • 3,301 tyres collected
  • 37,929 plastic bottles fished out
  • 4,195 metal cans recovered

For 24 months straight since September 2023, monthly clean-ups each cleared over one tonne of waste

In addition to this, they have collected a total of 246 ghost nets under their Project Xibka.

The majority of this debris has been collected from Xemxija, Paradise Bay and Manoel Island, three hotspots that continue to see high levels of marine litter.

Żibel thanked the volunteers and supporters who have joined clean-ups over the years, saying every haul makes Malta’s seas and shores cleaner
