Żibel Recover 150-Metre Ghost Net With Dead Fish Attached To It From Malta’s Waters
NGO Żibel has once again outdone itself, with its members now recovering a whopping 150-metre ghost net from Malta’s waters.
The ghost net, which was lifted up from the Ċirkewwa area, was found to have a number of marine animals attached to it, most of which were dead.
The ghost net was estimated to be around 120-metres to 150-metres in size, making it a mid-size one. Fourteen dead fish were found attached to it, along with a lobster and a few crabs which were thankfully saved.
“The net was caught on the bottom of the reef, as well as being entangled with older nets that have been there some time due to the growth we found on them,” Żibel said on social media.
“We have also been in touch with the Cirkewwa Marine Park staff to update them on the net and its location which was unfortunately on the boundary of the marine park,” Żibel founder Andrew Schembri told Lovin Malta.
“This is not the first net in the area, nor will it be the last. Last year we collected a larger ghost net just further east of this location.”
“A huge thank you to the divers who reported the net to us and the divers who subsequently removed the net,” he said, referring to divers Arkadiusz Srebnik and Dora Farkas who carried out the mission.
The net collection fell under Project Punent, which is funded by the BeMed Foundation and its partners @fondationprincealbert2 @surfridereurope @fondationtaraocean and @iucn_med.
Well done to all involved!
