Żibel Supports Blue Lagoon Regeneration Plan

The Maltese environmental NGO Żibel has thrown its support behind the Blue Lagoon regeneration plan announced by government and tourism officials, saying it aligns with their mission to protect natural environments and reduce waste.
Żibel’s endorsement adds weight to the recently unveiled project, which aims to balance ecosystem protection with enhancing visitor experience.
The proposal, launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Ian Borg together with architect Jonathan Mizzi of Mizzi Studio, includes removing kiosks along the shoreline, expanding the swimming area, restoring garigue habitat, improving waste management and visitor facilities, and introducing sustainable materials.
It is set to undergo public consultation and permitting before construction begins.
Żibel, known for its marine plastic recovery, beach clean-ups, and volunteer education programmes, said that the regeneration project could help preserve the fragile ecosystems around Comino and the Blue Lagoon, reduce littering, and improve visitor behaviour.
The NGO emphasised that for the plan to succeed it will need strong enforcement of environmental protections and community engagement.
Will Żibel’s support boost public trust in the project?
