Żurrieq Residents Raise €3,500 To Sue Planning Authority Over Nigret Development
Żurrieq residents have successfully raised €3,500 to sue the Planning Authority (PA) over approving a monstrous development in Nigret which will see agricultural land turned into apartment blocks.
The development, filed by architect and Former Minister George Pullicino, was approved back in June, with residents assuring they will be taking legal action.
As a result of this decision, the area of almost 12,000 square metres of arable agricultural land – a football ground and a half – has gotten the blessing from the PA to be transformed into hundreds of apartments.
“This construction onslaught will change Żurrieq forever, and not for the better. They will bring more and more pollution, congestion, and irreversible loss of farmland,” the residents had said.
But now, residents have managed to raise even more than their original goal of €3,000, giving them enough funds to be able to take the PA to court over the decision.
Many funds were also gathered in memory of late Andrew Schembri, with his family appealing for donations to be given to the organisations he cared about after his untimely death.
The PA had approved the development, despite over 1,500 objections being filed against it, sparking outrage across the community.
Around 1,500 residents had also sent an open letter to Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Minister for Planning, as well as MPs Omar Farrugia, Owen Bonnici, Tony Bezzina and Stanley Zammit.
Planning Control application PC/00049/19 seeks to open a stretch of 11,590sqm of agricultural land for development.
