Żurrieq Residents Send Letters To Their Local MPs Pleading To ‘Preserve’ Their Town
A group of Żurrieq residents are organising ahead of a press conference to be held next Sunday at 11am over a proposed development of an ODZ site in Nigret, limits of Żurrieq.
In an attempt to cease the development, the some 1,500 residents sent an open letter to Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Minister for Planning, as well as MPs Omar Farrugia, Owen Bonnici, Tony Bezzina and Stanley Zammit.
“We believe in keeping an open dialogue, however the anger of the residents is evident. The efforts to preserve our town and the wellbeing of its people will continue undeterred, despite the powerful interests we’re up against,” the residents said in their letter.
Residents believe the development will have a massive impact on the quality of their life, reducing the amount of open space available to the public. They wanted to alert the authorities that if this development continues, they will have ultimately failed at protecting them from the heavy ascent of overdevelopment.
Planning Control application PC/00049/19 seeks to open a stretch of 11,590sqm of agricultural land for development. The PA’s executive council will be hearing the application on Tuesday.
