If there’s one thing Maltese cult icon Clinton Paul has definitely been asked before, it’s when he’s going to be trying his luck out at the Eurovision Song Contest. Well, it seems like 2018 might be the year the Badass Soldier – along with six other local singers including Ozzy Lino – gets his big break. There’s just one catch; it wouldn’t be representing Malta.
For the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, San Marino are switching things up with an “internet candidate” to represent them. Put simply, their 2018 representative will be selected using a Europe-wide talent casting process which will mostly take place online.
Seven Maltese artists have tried their luck by sending in their auditions. Here’s the full list, along with their auditions.
1. Clinton Paul
2. Ozzy Lino
3. Lyndsay Pace
4. Victoria Sciberras
5. Malcolm Pisani
6. Odessa Green
7. Daniel Muscat
The seven Maltese singers joined 360 hopefuls for the 2018 Eurovision. A shortlist of 10 artists will be published in early December.
Of these, up to three may be selected by wildcard. From January to February 2018, the 10 shortlisted candidates will be invited to perform in front of a jury in a series of live recorded shows that will be broadcast online and via satellite TV on a new collaboration between San Marino Radio and Television and 1 in 360.
So while it would be amazing to finally see Clinton Paul at the Eurovision, there’s a certain bittersweet nature to having him compete against Malta. Let’s just say we know who we’re voting for if that’s the case.
