‘Unacceptable’: Malta Exploring Swiss Court Case Against Eurovision Censorship

Culture Minister Owen Bonnici confirmed that Malta is actively exploring the possibility of opening a court case in Switzerland – this year’s Eurovision host country – to challenge the EBU’s decision to censor Kant.

Bonnici stated that any potential court case will be based on the violation of our right to free expression and the blatant breach of the non-discrimination principle, specifically in relation to the Maltese language.

“I have always abhorred artistic censorship and I have worked a lot to fight it throughout my political career,” Bonnici said.

“The EBU’s decision against Miriana Conte is nothing but a textbook case of artistic censorship.”

“This was a disproportionate and discriminatory measure against the Maltese language. ‘Kant’ is a beautiful word in our language and it doesn’t deserve to be censored.”

“While Miriana Conte will, of course, continue her journey to this prestigious platform—since boycotting is not a solution—we will not turn a blind eye to this censorship.”

We have informed the EBU that any steps we will take will be under protest against artistic censorship. We will appeal this decision internally and we are also actively studying a potential court case in the Swiss courts based on the breach of our right to free expression and the breach of the principle of non-discrimination that was completely violated with regards to the Maltese language.”

“I have no doubt that Miriana Conte, her team and PBS will do their utmost to ensure Malta shines in Switzerland. However, this artistic censorship that we Maltese have suffered is disproportionate and discriminatory, and we will not simply accept it as if nothing happened.”
