‘We Have Hit Rock Bottom’: PL President Calls Out Kant Censorship

PL President Alex Sciberras has criticised the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for their decision to censor the Maltese word ‘Kant’ from Malta’s Eurovision entry.

“We have truly reached rock bottom if we are censoring a Maltese word just because it sounds like or could be interpreted as a word in another language,” Sciberras said.

“It is really sad that, in 2025, we are still fighting against censorship and infantile sensitivity of those who feel that their modesty is offended.”

Malta’s Eurovision representative Miriana Conte announced yesterday that the EBU has banned her from using the word ‘Kant’ – the Maltese word for ‘singing’ – in this year’s competition.

“While I’m shocked and disappointed, especially since we have less than a week to submit the song, I promise you this: the show will go on. Diva not down,” she said.

It is unknown how Malta will react to the EBU’s decision, although several people are urging the nation to stand firm and threaten to boycott the competition entirely.
