Miss Sliema, Teresa Ruglio, has been named Miss Universe Malta and will be representing the island in the international award show in December.

After she was given the crown in an excited and packed ceremony last night, Ruglio took to Facebook to announce that her reign as Malta’s newest queen had officially begun.

“Malta Malta Malta,” she said, “it’s my honour to be your new queen. I promise you that I will give my all. I will continue the great job that our queen Francesca Mifsud did. I feel so grateful, thank you to all, the Miss Universe Malta organization, my directors, our photographer. Thank you to my coach, thank you to every single person who believed in me. Malta, let’s shine in Miss Universe 2019.”

She was crowned the winner after a close run-off between herself and Miss Gzira, following Miss Naxxar being given third place

The show, which was held last night, was hosted by Ben Camille and Sarah Zerafa, and ended with an emotional speech by Ruglio.

“I feel that when you believe in yourself when you just focus on yourself, you can achieve anything, and this crown is not only my crown,” she said as her voice broke,” but I’m wearing this crown for all my sisters, we had an amazing experience, thank you for the opportunity, grazzi ħafna!”

Teresa moved to Malta three years ago with her family when the crisis in Venezuela got out of hand

When she came to Malta, she had to learn English from the beginning. She is the youngest girl from 11 siblings, and she said she had dedicated her run in Miss Universe Malta to her late brother Bruno.

Her goal is to eventually become a motivational speaker.

Host Sarah Zerafa also took to social media to show off some of her best looks from the long-awaited ceremony
