When Beauty Pauses: A Fashion Performance By Matias

A fashion performance titled “Meta l-Ġmiel Jieħu Pawża”, “When Beauty Takes a Pause”, is coming to the Msida BlueBox theatre on 15th November, inviting attendees to reflect about overdevelopment, the loss of natural and cultural heritage, and the growing disconnection from beauty in our built environment.
“Meta l-Ġmiel Jieħu Pawża” is set to be more than a fashion performance, it promises to be an act of resistance, a meditation on change and an invitation to reflect. Blending activism, art, and fashion, the performance draws inspiration from the pressing issue of local overdevelopment, examining not only the physical transformation of spaces but also the emotional toll it leaves on communities.
At its heart, the performance asks: how do people respond to these changes, and what silences linger in their wake? Fashion becomes the medium through which these questions are posed—a visual and visceral language that challenges, resists, and unsettles. Here, garments are not just worn; they are lived in, struggled with, and performed.
Created by Matias, an emerging fashion brand led by student designer Matias Cassar, the work reflects the brand’s ethos of timeless glamour and confidence. Yet within this performance, beauty is not passive; it is an active force, a tool of confrontation, and a mirror of society’s fractures.
The performance is the product of a dedicated collaboration:
The concept, sewing and project management is done by Matias Cassar, makeup by Liam Lee Camilleri, photography by Jake Gialanzè, set design by Andrew Inguanez, social media and script: Jenson Elsworth, artivisti Mentor: Luke Saydon
The project was made possible with the support of Mvintage, Esplora and Brown’s Pharmacy, and is funded by Arts Council Malta and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ through the Artivisti Programme. This initiative underscores the role of young voices in shaping Malta’s cultural dialogue, highlighting how art can question, provoke and empower.
