Weekends are already fun as is, but when you add some early summer vibes into the mix, you’d best be ready for a very good one. And following today’s public holiday, this weekend has got it all if you’re still not satisfied as far as events go.

Here are nine things to do to get you started for the weekend.

Friday 8th June

1. Valletta Film Festival

For the next week, the capital city will be transformed into one big cinema, with screenings and film events all over Valletta.

The programme for the fourth edition of the VFF is as intense as they get, and it all starts tomorrow.

2. A triple-band bill

Żebbuġ’s garage will be hosting three of the most exciting bands in the local progressive and metal scenes; Viper Soup ComplexA Broken Design and Shlamizard.

3. A German giant and a Maltese favourite join forces at a legendary club

Damiano von Erckert will be coming to Malta and bringing some heat with him for a classic night at the one and only Liquid Club in San Ġwann.

He’ll be joined by OTR’s Nicky Slim, who’s been making waves in Malta thanks to popular clubbing nights like Disco Frisco.

Saturday 9th June

An afternoon of empowering Maltese women through music

Malta Sound Women Network are back doing what they do best. This time, their free concert will see live performances by Tricia Dawn Williams, Luc Houtkamp, Jess Rymer & Glen Montanaro the MSWN teens and Yews, one of the founders of the orgnisation.

A night of electronic music in a każin

You read that right.

Exploring Electronic Melodies will be returning for an anticipated second edition, this time hitting up the Każin in Mosta.

Guiding through the night will be Jade, A-Call, Resume Inc. and Distant Dream. This one’s for all the lovers of underground.

Rocking for a good cause

Moviment Graffitti‘s fundraising Reżistenza Rock is back, this time at The Garage, for more of what it says on the tin.

The three-band lineup (which includes the likes of psychedelic-prog outfit Pyramid Suns) will also see DJ Zè Heckler dropping some tunes throughout the night.

All the money raised from the event will used be for a wide variety of things to support Moviment Graffitti’s cause; in their own words, they have “premises rents to pay, banners and paints to buy, sound systems to repair, websites to maintain, and a lot of tiny tidbits that can add up to a lot of money over time”.

One of the island’s most popular hip hop events is back

Five very successful editions later, A Thing Called Hip Hop will be returning to Manoel Island’s Funky Monkey this weekend.

Expect old classics and new favourites alongside each other, and six different DJs to take the stage.

Bangers all night long.

Sunday 10th June

Visit a Maltese museum for free!

Entry to the National Museum of Natural History in Mdina will be absolutely free of charge this Sunday as part of a Heritage Malta incentive.

The museum will open from 9am to 5pm, and the last admission is at 4:30pm. Guided tours will also be available at 10am, 1pm and 3pm.

End the weekend in style with a performance by one of the alternative scene’s favourite bands… and one of its newest favourites!

If you’re into Malta’s alternative music scene, it’s impossible to not have heard of Brodu. The band’s two albums have seen the guys go from strength to strength, quickly becoming one of the scene’s favourite acts.

This Sunday, they’ll be performing at another każin, this time in Zabbar, alongside Djun, another Maltese-singing band that’s already gaining some traction online.

In their own words, the night will be full of “Pop songs in Maltese, existential crises and hamburgers.” Neat.

Tag someone who still needs to plan their weekend!
