The much awaited Kinemastik International Short Film Festival 2023 will take place on the 28th to 29th July at the Garden of Rest, Floriana.

Kinemastik is not just a short film festival but also a community which brings like-minded film and music lovers together from around the world. This international participation is reinforced with the mythical parties that take place after the film shows which allow for intensive networking and recreation.

Since its inception, Kinemastik has widened its audience dramatically, in the meanwhile igniting interest in independent film and film-making in the Maltese audience. The competition has encouraged potential film makers to brave it out and show their talents to the world.

Children’s workshops helped instil the love of film and film-making at an early age.

The festival offers two nights of award-winning short films, both international and Maltese, in competition on the main screen, plus a secret selection of films under the programme Neck of the Woods.

The programme is released only a few days before the event.

From 11.30 onwards the landscape will turn to music where the attendees are encouraged to  put on their dance shoes and shed their inhibitions.

On Friday legendary local band Shostakovich’s Nightmare with frontman Antonio Tufigno, and the Kinemastik DJs will shake the dancefloor.

On Saturday Kinemastik is collaborating with Los Angeles-based record label Italians Do It Better, to bring some Hollywood gore and glamour to our cemetery in Floriana.

The night will feature a special guest DJ set by one of the label’s flagship artists, Desire – the incredible Megan Louise – alongside a special live performance by Maltese artists JOON and Bark Bark Disco, plus sets from returning DJs Dean Wengrow and Campbell Reid.

Italians Do It Better’s iconic sound of shimmering and dreamy synth-pop’ and ‘slick noir disco’ has led to their work being featured on multiple films, including Nicolas Winding Refn’s seminal Drive, plus Bronson and Lost River, with tracks also used in the TV show Twin Peaks: the Return.

The adoption of JOON and Bark Bark Disco into the Italians Do It Better label family has been a breakthrough development for the Maltese music scene – this collaboration is truly a chance to celebrate!

Kinemastik is supported by Arts Council Malta through an Investment in Cultural Organisations grant.

Sponsors 2023: Valletta Vintage, AP Valletta Architects, Mastering, ALDO and Marks & Spencer.
