Have you ever watched a Bollywood movie at a Maltese cinema? If you have, it’s probably thanks to Sathish Kumar.

Kumar hails from Chennai, India, and has been living in Malta for eight years. Having been instilled with the love of Bollywood movies by his father since he was a child, Kumar felt a void once he moved to a distant foreign country.

“I researched how to screen Indian films here in Malta and I decided to start bringing Indian films to Malta to watch together with the Indian community,” Kumar told Lovin Malta. “This made us very happy because we all miss our motherland. This has inspired me to bring more Indian-language and Bollywood films to the big screen.”

His main goal is to bring about cultural integration and promote Indian culture to Malta. To this end, he has started a Facebook page called Indian Movies Malta, to allow locals and migrants alike to appreciate Indian heritage with an exchange of knowledge, and to show Indians how Indian communities living aboard can be united.

“The main comments I received from locals are that Bollywood films provide love, affection, feelings, emotions, relationships, fun and interactive ways of knowledge. Besides, the appreciation of skilled acting and dancing will enhance the locals’ knowledge of our cultures and encourage them to learn other languages to help immerse themselves into different cultures,” Kumar said.

“My all-time favourite films are Sholay, Baashaa, Nayakan and Billa.  My recent favourite films are RRR and KGF which really thrilled me and gave me goosebumps.”

“The High Commission of India in Malta, as well as Indian and Bollywood fans, are encouraging and supporting me to pursue my endeavour.”

Bollywood films can be watched at Galleria Cinema Fgura, Embassy Cinemas and Eden Cinemas and new movies are announced on his Facebook page.
