BOO! Did we scare you? Halloween season has jump-scared us ever so stealthily this year, but we are prepared! Here are 9 movies and series which are sure to chill you to the bone and get you in that possessed Halloween spirit!
1. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
We started mild here. Get ready to be spellbound by the adventures of Sabrina Spellman who doesn’t really have a super relatable life – on her 16th birthday she has to make a choice, and no it’s not whether she’s going to JC or Higher. She is a half breed witch who has to choose whether she is going to be a full-on witch or not (basically see if she wants to be besties with Satan or not). Not your typical decision, now, is it?
2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
A cult classic when it comes to horror series. A chosen one is born in every era; they basically have to slay vampires and protect humanity from the rise of the Master – easy job huh? Not exactly. Not when your academic and late 90s social life get in the way of your destiny. Couple that with a forbidden romance and a rising evil and trust me, it’s no easy task!
3. Van Helsing
We all know and love Bram Stoker’s Dracula, right? (Get out and read the book if you don’t, maybe we’ll let you back in when you’re done.) This series features Vanessa Van Helsing, a descendant of the iconic Professor Abraham Van Helsing, and just like her ancestor she came prepared to slay some apocalyptic bloodsucking vampies (not only with weapons but also with her looks, gurl, she is dashing, to say the least!).
We all know the shower scene that everyone references, well that’s from this cult classic, one of Hitchcock’s most iconic works. We see the story of a secretary, Marion Crane (yes, the bird), who ends up hiding at a motel after snatching (yes, like a bird) money from her former employer. There she meets Norman Bates (bait, see where this is going?) in all of his eccentricities and odd pleasantries…
5. Scary Movie 1/2/3/4/5
We’re toning it down to a more light-hearted option; for the faint of heart, we recommend this film series. These movies focus on parodying horror film tropes and clichés that we all know and love. If you like a comedy with corny references to the early 2000s and sparse jump-scares, then this is the film series for you.
6. American Horror Story
This is an iconic series for thrill seekers and lovers of the gruesome and gory. Each season has a different story-line following nightmare-inducing plots such as a carnival, a murder house, a mental asylum and even a coven of witches (our personal fave!).
Whether you prefer the old but gold one or the fresh new remake, Pennywise will surely haunt your dreams. IT follows the story of a group of kids who encounter the literal representation of consumption – it feasts on fear and consumes its victims. Fun fact: IT’s worst enemy is a giant flying turtle #SaveTheTurtles!
8. Hocus Pocus
The Sanderson sisters are back back back again from the other side through an incantation and they are here to put a spell on you this Halloween season! This bewitching movie does not really need further explanation since it is an absolute classic that we all love to revisit. Plus, it’s just been confirmed that Disney+ will be releasing a sequel to this classic tale – what more of an excuse do you need to have a (re)watch?
9. The Nightmare Before Christmas
No, this stop motion masterpiece is not just a Christmas movie, but we believe one can watch it from Halloween through to Christmas. This movie tells the story of how Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of “Halloween Town”, finds a portal leading to “Christmas Town”. This is totally a favourite among many!
BONUS: Killer Unicorn
This Halloween season try to not get your wig snatched by the Killer Unicorn, a stunning hunk in pink sparkly hot pants and a unicorn mask. This movie revolves around a group of friends who are being tormented by the Killer Unicorn. Queers and queens alike are not safe from this chiseled hottie!
