Watch: Marisa Abela Shines As Amy Winehouse In New Biopic Trailer… And She Even Nails The Singing!
We finally have a proper look at Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse… and boy does she absolutely nail the part!
Back in 2022, the exciting newcomer with Maltese roots was confirmed to be playing the late English pop icon in the highly-anticipated biopic Back To Black… but after nearly two years, we got to see what Abela’s Winehouse looks and sounds like.
“Her music, her life, her legacy,” Marisa wrote on Instagram this afternoon, sharing the first teaser trailer from the biopic. But that wasn’t even the most impressive part of it all, with the trailer’s reinterpretation of the iconic Back To Black actually being sung by Abela herself.

“Yes! Me singing, thanks to my teacher Anne Marie Speed and Giles Martin,” Abela said, shouting out the record producer who she worked with at Abbey Road Studios for 18 months. “Marisa is not only a brilliant actress but one of the best vocalists I have worked with,” Martin said last night, showering Abela with well-deserved praise.
Abela – whose international roots include a Maltese-Libyan father and Polish and Russian roots from her mother’s side – has played a number of roles throughout her career. Starring in HBO’s Industry, she also had a minor role in the 2023 Greta Gerwig phenomenon Barbie, where she played Teen Talk Barbie.
