If you’re a fan of Malta’s musical history or Maltese culture in general, then you’ll want to keep an eye out for the next big project being organised by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti.

Music In Malta: From Prehistory to Vinyl is a series of events that will delve deep into the history and development of music and sound in Malta. Starting this Friday with a performance by veteran local roots band *etnika, a series of gigs by local and foreign musicians will be occurring over the coming months, leading up to a main exhibition that will run from April to June 2019.

The exhibition, which is guest curated by leading music historian Dr Anna Borg Cardona, will showcase how Malta’s traditional instruments and sounds fit into a Mediterranean context. It will cover the history of music in Malta, from the prehistoric era to the early twentieth century, through an extensive display of musical instruments sourced from Malta’s private and public collections.

But April 2019 is still a while away, which is why FPM have a whole schedule of events to keep you busy until then

Starting this month, FPM is organising a series of music gigs celebrating the diverse history of Maltese music. The concerts will include a variety of genres and styles from popular, folk and classical traditions which are connected historically, geographically or musically to Malta. The events are being co-organised by #EngageCREATIVES, a creative support platform run by multi-percussionist Renzo Spiteri and Gaby Giacchino.

To local music buffs, *etnika need no introduction. The band is now almost 20 years old and has gone through several reincarnations. Their distinctive style is an eclectic mix of old and new. They blend 1930s original Maltese recordings, folk rhymes and għana (using traditional instruments such as the żummara, bijambo and żafżafa) together with contemporary sounds and styles to create a truly unique experience.

*etnika will be infusing their tripfolk sound with some old classics, as well as some more contemporary and new compositions; a programme specifically created to resonate with FPM’s exciting new project.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch them do their thing, now is your chance!
