Gone But Never Forgotten: A Guide To Timeless Maltese Series
The world may have the likes of Friends, Breaking Bad and The Wire, but Malta has some hidden gems that can rival all of those.
Let’s all reminisce on some timeless Maltese classics… or discover a new series to binge watch this month.
1. Ipokriti
This classic is a must watch for everyone who has a penchant for drama. The devious characters are always trying to find ways to undermine their rivals. The outfits are reminiscent of Dynasty and 80’s era Days of our Lives. This is the true definition of a guilty pleasure.
Memorable moment: Victor casually shooting up heroin at the office.
2. Id-Dar tas-Soru
This mystery/thriller drama is as addictive as it gets. Ray Abdilla gives quite a performance as he struggles to understand his childhood and his relationship with his mother and aunt.
Memorable moment: A (soon to be) nun throws a woman off a balcony.
3. Fenomeni
A psychic brother and sister duo fight ghost crimes (yes, ghost crimes) and demons in this paranormal series. The effects used are painful to watch. The suspenseful theme song constantly playing almost constantly throughout each episode is the most scary part of the series. However that said, this is a must watch.
Memorable Moment: Sylvia being held hostage by a satanist to be offered as a sacrifice to some demon.
4. The Becky Saga
Yes, that’s the full first episode. You’re welcome
We all remember watching Dejjem Tiegħek Becky when we were young. The acting, the cringe-worthy script, the plot, everything in this never-ending saga will make you feel guilty for watching it. But you must be warned, this woman is as addictive as they get.
Memorable Moment: Becky is miraculously cured from paraplegia when her son is in danger of being hit by a train.
5. Għada Jisbaħ Ukoll
Set around a widowed mother and her teenage daughter, we see their struggle to keep their giant palace of a house from going to ruins by renting out rooms to young women. During the series we see the dramatic stories of these women unravel as they grow and struggle to keep the damn house. Although the story is not particularly attention grabbing, the acting is stellar.
Memorable Moment: All of Auntie Lucy’s scenes.
6. Anġli
This action packed drama centres around two elite police officers fighting crime on the island. The series has outlived most other maltese dramas (does not compete with the Becky saga) and has also been turned into a movie.
Memorable Moment: Mhux every fight scene ever jew?
