Goodbye Funky Monkey: Gżira’s Beloved Music Shack Unveils ‘Lost Island’ Closing Weekend
As Manoel Island braces itself for an island-wide development that will see it get drastically transformed, a small eclectic music shack just off the G?ira bridge is gearing up for its last ever weekend of debauchery.
Yesterday night, The Funky Monkey unveiled one last set of events for this weekend
Cheekily named The Lost Island, this Friday’s event has been labelled as Part 1 of the closing weekend.
Ever since it opened its doors in late 2015, The Funky Monkey has been a staple of Malta’s underground live music scene. However, as Manoel Island’s masterplan became the centre-point of discussions last year, it soon became clear that there would be no place for the DIY music shack and its wooden pellets as luxury apartments go up on the small island.
“After a wonderful journey, it’s time to say one last goodbye!”
Taking to Facebook, the nightclub’s owner Ferry Jehle kicked off the online event with a heartfelt message inviting The Funky Monkey’s patrons to join in on the club’s closing weekend.
Friday’s party will see DJ Marsicano, Clint Spiteri and Kristian Vela dropping some classic hits, from old school rock and indie music to progressive and upbeat tracks. Within a couple of hours, over 400 people had already showed interest in attending, so it’s looking like a packed final weekend for the beloved venue.
Speaking to Lovin Malta, Jehle confirmed that every day this weekend will see similar closing parties being announced shortly. So if you miss your opportunity to see The Funky Monkey off on Friday night, your absolute final chances will have to be hours later, on Saturday and Sunday.
Farewell Funky, and thanks for all the memories.
