It’s no secret, we love the opera. So y’all know how we felt when we heard that Verdi’s most popular pieces is coming to Malta. La Traviata is one of the most critically acclaimed theatre performances of all time, and it’s coming to our beautiful sister island next weekend.

Gozo’s Astra Theatre will be presenting this masterpiece for the theatre’s 50th anniversary later this October.

With unique set designs and some pretty cool lighting tricks, the Astra team will be wooing the crowd… especially considering how almost everyone is working on a voluntary basis.

This semi-autobiographical work tells the tragically dramatic love story between a young bourgeois and a courtesan, based on Alexandre Dumas’ 1852 play La Dame aux Camélias.

Verdi adapted it into an opera within a year, however the premiere was a complete fiasco, leaving the composer reluctant to allow any other productions. It has since become one of the most popular operas of all time.

Local Gozitan artist Joseph Cauchi is directing the wonderful backstage team at Astra. The Coro Lirico Siciliano will be performing on stage too, so be prepared for some spine-chilling vibes. The star-studded cast will include Miriam Cauci, Giulio Pelligra, Maxim Aniskin and Oana Andra.

This beautiful piece will be conducted by the internationally acclaimed Philip Walsh, and leading Italian artistic director Enrico Stinchelli will be working his magic too. YADA Dance Company will also be performing during this piece, so be sure not to miss it.

La Traviata will be kickstarting the 17th edition of Festival Mediterranea, and it will be taking place on the 25th and 27th of October. Both representations will start at 7:30pm.

The performance is supported by the Gozo Cultural Support Programme.
