Have You Got What It Takes To Win A Slot At The Coolest Maltese Music Festival?

One of Malta’s largest music festivals, Sickfest, is back with a bang for a third edition next week, and this year sees the organisers opening their doors to a whole new plethora of genres. Over its two nights, Sickfest will have different stages all over Paceville’s sprawling Tigullio Complex blasting out anything from hip hop, to alternative rock, to techno… and they’re looking for someone to fill in an empty slot. This, however, is where things get very interesting.

“Seeing as we’re offering a slot at a festival which is so varied, we want to make sure the applicants are just as free to do their own thing,” organisers Sick of Ants told Lovin Malta. “If we can find a band or a DJ, that would obviously be cool, but if we get a fire juggler or a magician, it would be just as sick!”

Yep, you read that right – you could be the next performer on the Sickfest lineup.

All you have to do to be in the chance of winning is go on Sickfest’s Facebook event page and share a photo or video of you doing what you do best, along with a short sentence explaining why you think you deserve the slot. While you’re at it, tag Lovin Malta (basically, tell ’em we sent you).

The performer that gets the most likes by Tuesday, wins the slot. It’s that simple!

The chosen performer will have the honour of performing along some of the hottest names in the scene right now, thanks to the organisers’ numerous collaborations over the different stages. One stage, for example, is going to be entirely dedicated to Lollipop, who have been taking Malta by storm with their monthly gay bashes. Another one will see hip hop and trap promoters Tale, whose parties have never failed to sell out. The night will also see a live performance by 215 Collectivea young local hip hop group who we think can really go places.

If techno is more your thing, Sickfest has also got you covered. Entropy is bringing PSYK to the festival, whose gig rotation includes the legendary Boiler Room Sessions and Berlin’s infamous Berghain, one of the world’s most popular nightclubs.

Of course, Sickfest will still be focusing on bands for this third edition, and nine local acts will take the stage over the two nights. The artists, ranging from hardcore punk trio BILA to the quirky Bark Bark Disco, will also be joined by two international bands; Neon Islandsfrom the UK and Italy’s Caron Dimonio

In 2012, local alternative music promoters Sick of Ants organized a music festival in Buskett featuring the top local acts from the alternative scene. After a couple of years that saw the organization hosting odd parties around the island, Sickfest returned in 2016 with a two-day festival over Santa Marija weekend. This year sees the organisers embodying the very essence of ‘bigger and better’.

“We wanted to capture all that’s cool within the Maltese subculture scenes and put it all under one roof over one weekend,” Sick of Ants told Lovin Malta about their decision to include so many different scenes in their festival. “We want to show everyone that there’s more to the local alternative scene than meets the eye, and that there’s something for everyone.”

Sickfest is being organised in collaboration with Lovin Malta, XFM and Alternative Hairdressing. Tickets for the festival are out now, and more information can be found on the official Facebook event page.
