Act FAST, Save Lives: MANNS lead National Stroke Awareness Campaign in Malta

Throughout May, the Malta Association for Neurologists and Neurosurgeons (MANNS), in collaboration with the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, launched a nationwide Stroke Awareness Campaign. Aimed at educating the general public, the initiative focused on recognising the signs of stroke and the importance of acting quickly in an emergency.
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability globally. In Malta alone, two people suffer a stroke each day. Sadly, many individuals do not seek medical attention early enough, which can make them ineligible for life-saving treatments. The campaign emphasised the FAST acronym: Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services (112), to help people identify stroke symptoms and respond immediately.
To amplify its reach, MANNS rolled out a dynamic social media campaign across multiple platforms, featuring vital stroke information, real-life testimonials, and expert guidance on prevention and emergency response.
On May 23rd, a joint symposium titled “A Stroke Journey” was held in partnership with the Maltese Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. The event brought together professionals from various disciplines involved in stroke care to exchange insights and strategies for improving outcomes for stroke patients in Malta.
Looking ahead, MANNS, in coordination with the Department of Health and Mater Dei Hospital, will unveil a series of impactful billboards across the island. These will spotlight the core message: “Act Fast, Call 112,” reinforcing the urgency of seeking immediate help when stroke symptoms appear.
Dr Nicola Dingli, President of MANNS, emphasised the campaign’s mission: “Our goal in this campaign is not only to raise awareness but also to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to act quickly. The sooner a person receives treatment, the better their outcomes. We urge everyone to familiarise themselves with the signs of stroke and to take immediate action if they suspect someone is having a stroke.”
MANNS encourages the public to support this life-saving initiative by sharing information, engaging with the campaign on social media, and spreading awareness within their communities. With collective effort, more lives can be saved and long-term disability reduced.
