Health Minister Chris Fearne and Shadow Health Minister Stephen Spiteri have received their first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Fearne and Spiteri got inoculated at the  Paola Health Centre this morning, becoming the first two major Maltese politicians to receive the vaccine.

After getting vaccinated and sharing some light banter with Spiteri, Fearne urged people to trust in science, not superstition.

“Science isn’t superstition and scientists managed to give us a COVID-19 vaccine in under a year,” he said.

“It’s science which will beat COVID-19. Despite ongoing discussions in Europe about problems with the vaccination rollout, Malta is doing well.”

He said Malta is on track to vaccinate all vulnerable people by May and for herd immunity to be achieved by September.

The vaccine rollout will be extended to pharmacists tomorrow, and over 80s will start getting vaccinated next week.

Spiteri said he hopes today’s double vaccination will go some way into calming the doubts of vaccine sceptics.

“I urge people to continue following the health authorities’ anti-COVID-19 measures until we reach herd immunity.”
