EXCLUSIVE: Malta’s GU Clinic To Double In Staff By September, Health Minister Pledges

At the start of July, Lovin Malta reported that there were just five full-time staff members despite the growing number of sexually transmitted diseases in the country.

Our very own rapper-turned-Kaxxaturi-host Jon Mallia took the issue head-on in a bid to #MakeItSafeToFuckChrisFearne this week… and it looks like we’ve achieved our goal.

The government is also working on a new sexual health policy which will be published for consultation by the end of the year.

A targeted action plan on HIV is also in the works, which will focus on targeted actions for prevention, diagnosis, and early care and treatment.

Speaking to Lovin Malta about the strategy a few weeks ago, the ministry said that the policy will be based on a positive approach to sexuality that is “based on respect, gender equality, sexual expression, and the freedom from violence and discrimination”.

At present, 5,684 people visit the GU Clinic per year. While the number is a significant improvement over previous years, it’s still far short of ideal when taking into the account the number of sexually active people in the country. The investment in staff at the clinic is sure to help.
