Free HIV Testing In Malta By Local NGO Starts Today
Checkpoint Malta is offering free community-led HIV monthly testing sessions in Valletta and Gozo, as well as bi-monthly sessions in Paola, all throughout 2024.
The sessions will start today at the Valletta Volunteer Centre from 5pm to 8pm, followed by tomorrow at the LGTIQ+ Gozo Qawsalla Hub in Victoria, Gozo from 4pm to 7pm.
Meanwhile, Paola sessions will kick off on Thursday 25th January at the LGBTIQ+ Hub from 5 to 8pm.
“Testing is free, fast, and confidential, with results being given in just 20 minutes. Testing is carried out by trained, non-judgemental volunteers in safe, community-based spaces. Fast-track referrals and counselling will be organised when necessary.”
The NGO recommended that all sexually active adults get regularly tested. Early detection of the infection is ideal because patients can start treatment and subsequently protect their immune systems.
“With treatment, people can reduce the amount of HIV in their body to an undetectable viral load, which also means that they cannot transmit the virus to their sexual partners. This is known as U=U, Undetectable = Untransmittable.”
Moreover, the organisation reminded that the normalisation of regular testing, both for HIV and other STIs, helps reduce stigma and transmission rates.

It must be noted that prior to the last general elections, the labour government promised the introduction of PrEP and PEP HIV medication in Malta, however, around two years later, this still has not come to fruition.
When probed by Lovin Malta, the ministry, formerly led by now EU-Funds Minister Chris Fearne, stated that it will be addressed in the sexual health policy which officials have also taken their sweet time to compile and finalise.
So, for a robust and effective approach to the infection, these promises will have to materialise.
The HIV testing project is in collaboration with HIV Malta, LGBTI+ Gozo, the Human Rights Directorate, Sexual Health Malta, and the GU Clinic, and is supported by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ through the BeActive scheme. Referrals will be made to the GU Clinic, as necessary.
