Government Updates Medicine Formulary To Improve Access To Mental Health Treatments

The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has announced a revision of the government’s medicine formulary to enhance access to mental health treatments. This update will also expand prescribing rights for specialists and family doctors, ensuring patients receive the necessary care more efficiently.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental health as a state of well-being that enables individuals to realise their potential, cope with life’s stresses, work productively and contribute to their communities. Achieving sustainable mental health remains fundamental to overall well-being.
Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, highlighted how medical advancements are proving effective in the prevention and management of mental health conditions.
Through the Mental Health Strategy for Malta 2020-2030, the government is committed to ensuring that those in need receive the required care and support within a community-based setting.

In light of this, the Maltese government is revising and updating its formulary to reflect access to the latest evidence-based treatments. At the same time, it is granting enhanced prescribing rights to specialists and family doctors, allowing them to submit applications for medicine entitlements for a range of mental health conditions. Additionally, specialists and family doctors will gain access to specialised mental health services, both within community-based clinics and dedicated mental health facilities.
“This initiative is designed to simplify access to treatment, ensuring that patients receive timely care directly within their communities. The National Health System is fostering a more integrated and holistic approach to care, ultimately leading to improved mental health outcomes,” concluded Minister Abela.
