Gozo General Hospital Introduces Advanced Cardiac CT And MRI Services

Gozo General Hospital has officially introduced advanced cardiac CT and MRI services, Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela announced.
This development follows a €5 million investment at the Gozo hospital and marks a significant step forward in cardiac care for Gozitan and Maltese patients.
“Thanks to an investment of around €5 million in recent months at the Gozo Hospital, we have not only eliminated the waiting list for MRI and CT scans entirely, but we can now begin offering these services in Gozo itself,” Abela said earlier today.
Abela explained that following the recent acquisition of two state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanners, Gozo General Hospital can now offer detailed and non-invasive heart tests, allowing for earlier and more accurate diagnoses.
He outlined how the introduction of Cardiac CT enables the rapid detection of coronary artery disease in low- to intermediate-risk patients, as well as precise visualisation of heart valves and the aorta in certain cases. Meanwhile, the Cardiac MRI offers in-depth examinations of heart function, inflammation, scarring of the heart muscle, and detailed evaluation of heart valves.
It was noted that thanks to the collaboration between the Department of Medical Imaging in Malta and Gozo, led by Dr Melvin D’Anastasi, and the Cardiology Department, these services will enable efficient diagnosis and advanced treatment of heart conditions. This will reduce the need for patients to travel to Malta for specialised services, while also highlighting the Government’s commitment to expanding healthcare services and improving outcomes for both Gozitan and Maltese patients.
