Gozo To Mater Dei In Minutes: Direct Helicopter Link Now Operational
In a significant development for emergency healthcare in Malta, Health and Active Aging Minister Jo Etienne Abela has announced the launch of a direct helicopter transfer service between Gozo and Mater Dei Hospital.
This new connection aims to save lives by reducing patient transfer times during critical emergencies.
Minister Abela explained that the Mater Dei helipad, originally intended for such operations when the hospital began functioning, had faced challenges preventing its use.

Recognising the vital importance of a fully operational helipad for a central hospital, the ministry prioritised the site’s rehabilitation, overcoming logistical and technical obstacles to make it functional.
The revamped helipad saw its inaugural test flight on 5th December, followed by its first medical use just days later, on 10th December.
During this milestone operation, a Gozitan patient in a state of emergency was transported to Mater Dei in just 15 minutes, enabling a swift transition to an angiographic intervention in the Radiology Department.
“This is a crucial development in the care of Gozitan patients,” Minister Abela remarked.
“For us, the health of the patient will remain an absolute priority. Therefore, we will continue to strengthen this service, with the next phase being the establishment of a helipad at the Gozo General Hospital.”
The project was carried out with collaboration from the Medical Services Foundation, Transport Malta, and international aviation specialists. Minister Abela also extended his gratitude to the professionals involved for their commitment to improving healthcare access for Gozitan residents.
The helipad at Mater Dei marks a significant step forward in providing timely medical interventions for Gozitans.
Plans are already underway to enhance the service further with the development of a dedicated helipad at Gozo General Hospital.
