10-year-old Henry Mamo has unfortunately been admitted to Mater Dei Hospital once again.

“And just when you think things are on the right track, this is how the day unfolded at 2.00 a.m. – right back to the start in a blink of an eye,” his mother, Lorinda, shared on an Instagram page recently dedicated to sharing their inspirational, yet heartbreaking story.

Fortunately, Lorinda told Lovin Malta that Henry’s condition is improving since his admission a couple of days ago.

Amid these turbulent and uncertain times, both Lorinda’s and Henry’s attitudes have remained extremely admirable, reminding their followers and themselves to appreciate the little wins in life.

“I could say September was off to a very bad start but I am choosing to reframe my thoughts and instead be grateful for the work of the wonderful medical, surgical, and nursing teams (yes, teamS).”

“We don’t have all the answers because nothing about this is exactly straightforward – and he’s not completely out of the woods yet but he’s being guided ever so cautiously.”

“I’m scared… scratch that- terrified… and that’s ok. We’ll cry and that’s ok too, this is another challenge that we need to push through.”

Lorinda went on to explain that she chooses to share moments from this journey for two main reasons. Firstly, to create awareness of the struggles of medically complex illnesses and secondly, to shed light on the “wonderful work of those amazing people at Mater Dei Hospital who take care of him”.

During his hospital stay, the mother-son duo began to share more about their day-to-day through Instagram live videos where Henry’s witty, charming, and wise personality shines.

“He loves chatting and interacting and I wanted him to experience all the love you share with me. So I asked him if he felt like a live with you just about random things and guys… thank you!” a caption beneath one of the recent videos read.

From what we can see, Henry is a budding collector. He loves to collect old iPhones and iPods and was extremely excited to show everyone his fourth-generation iPod touch.

He’s also an avid Lego builder, explaining that the Titanic Lego set is on his wish list as Lorinda joked about there being no space left in their home for another set.

The young boy further amazed viewers with his voice as he performed his own remixed rendition of “Sunflower” where he opened up about the frustrations of not being able to eat or drink during some points of his treatments.

This can last days.

Moreover, these endearing yet sobering lives showcase the beautiful dynamic between the pair, with Henry describing his mother as his best friend.

“I am stronger because of him but still not as strong as him. And still, I remind him (and myself) it’s ok to cry, it’s ok to be scared because it doesn’t make us any less strong,” a caption below a video showing the reality of seeing one’s child endure “necessary” pain read.

In one of her posts, Lorinda explains that Henry is immunosuppressed, medically complex, and recovering from a kidney transplant.

“It can get serious very quickly, but this is his life and we make peace with it the best way we can and make the most of every moment- as best as we can.”

Besides being a devoted mother, Lorinda runs Club Creative and HappyPlay Co where Henry acts as HEO – Happiness Executive Officer.

She also forms part of the Mater Dei Hospital Children’s Foundation which aims to empower and advance excellence in child healthcare and health research, ensuring the well-being of young patients and their families.
