The Minister for Health and Active Aging, Jo Etienne Abela, inaugurated a new ward at Mater Dei which will accommodate around 40 patients.

The work on Ward M10 was carried out with an investment of €1.4 million and about €140,000 in medical equipment.

It was explained that the construction of this ward required significant work as this area was not previously a clinical one. Among the works carried out were the construction of new walls, a treatment room and new toilets and showers for patients.

Changes were also made to the electrical and mechanical systems such as ventilation, air conditioning, water and lighting. This was to serve the new function of the area as a ward that provides patient care. Additional systems were also added, including the Nurse Call system, the Pneumatic Tube system and medical gases.

Minister Abela explained how through the investment made by the Ministry in infrastructural and engineering works as well as investment in medical equipment, this ward is now welcoming patients and providing medical services.

He stated that the back part of this ward is intended to become a ‘Medical High Dependency Unit’ where a number of professionals who will be taking care of seriously ill patients are already being trained.

“Through this investment that started at the end of last year, today we are seeing a place that was not clinical, transformed into a fully equipped clinical ward that can serve patients. This continues with the Government’s vision to strengthen healthcare in our country,” concluded Minister Jo Etienne Abela.
