Local Council Reports Madliena Rat Infestation To Environmental Health Department
A rat infestation plaguing the residents of Madliena was reported to the Environmental Health Department over a week ago, the Swieqi Local Council informed Lovin Malta.
“The video is shocking – rats have become a serious problem across the island,” Deputy Mayor of Swieqi Jordan Galea Pace said about footage published earlier today by this newsroom.
“While the council has already alerted the environmental health department, it’s time for the government to investigate the root cause of this infestation and develop a comprehensive plan to tackle it, not just in Swieqi but also in nearby areas like Sliema and St. Julian’s.”
The situation in Madliena was reported on 4th October.
Pace explained that there’s a widespread and persistent garbage issue that’s fuelling this rat problem.
“With Local Councils stripped of their powers, more bureaucracy is slowing down our efforts.”
Nonetheless, the council will be holding a cleanup on 26th October to help battle this issue – anyone can join.
Footage sent to Lovin Malta showed dozens of rats trying to climb into a tank that is said to contain food. Many of the rodents can be heard chirping and seen jumping as others run across the roadside and up the walls.
According to the resident, persistent illegal dumping – including of fridges and freezers – is the main cause of this infestation which has been persisting for days.
