Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, has announced that the Continuous Glucose Monitoring service is to be extended so that more people have access to it.

This announcement comes a few days after the Diabetes Department of Mater Dei Hospital was internationally recognised as a Centre of Excellence.

Diabetes affects 10% of the population and this essential service, offered by the Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor, allows  more precise blood sugar control and improves the quality of life and prognosis for diabetic patients.

This service is now being extended to the following people:

  • Individuals with type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) who are between the ages of 35 and 45
  • Individuals who become insulin-dependent due to illness related to the pancreas
  • Individuals who suffer from gestational diabetes

Approximately 200 people are expected to benefit from this service for the first time, which is being implemented with an investment of more than one million euros.

“This measure is one of a series of measures the government is taking to address the condition of diabetes, including other associated conditions such as obesity. We are committed to continue working to ensure that this service is further extended to reach more people and will also work on other innovations that guarantee health to the Maltese,” concluded Minister Jo Etienne Abela.
