Malta Holds First-Ever Amputees Sports Festival, Celebrating Ability In All Its Forms

For the first time ever, Malta’s amputee community came together for a full day of sports, games, and teamwork at the inaugural Amputees Sports Festival.
Organised by the NGO Amputees for Amputees, the event took place on 18th October and welcomed participants of all ages and abilities, from children to adults, and from beginners to seasoned athletes.
The festival was designed to be fully inclusive, with activities tailored to accommodate different types of amputations.
This resulted in a day that celebrated ability, resilience, and the joy of participation, showing that physical differences don’t define what someone can achieve.
Support from key partners, including the Vascular and Amputee Rehabilitation Unit (VARU) FSR Malta and Kevin Zammit, helped turn the ambitious idea into reality. Their involvement was crucial in making the festival not only possible, but a resounding success.
Members of the amputee community were at the heart of the event, leading its planning and delivery. Their efforts created a dynamic and empowering environment where participants were encouraged to challenge themselves, try new sports, and celebrate both individual and collective achievements.
“This festival showed what happens when we come together with a shared goal,” said a representative from Amputees for Amputees. “It wasn’t about limits; it was about participation, progress, and enjoying the moment.”
The festival has now laid the foundation for future editions, with Amputees for Amputees planning to grow the event even further to reach more members of the community in the years ahead.
The NGO is dedicated to supporting the integration, well-being, and participation of Malta’s amputee community through advocacy, support programs, and community-building initiatives.
