Malta Signs Paris Declaration Supporting Mental Health At WHO High-Level Conference

In Paris, France, Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela is attending the WHO Regional High-Level Conference on Mental Health, where, on behalf of Malta, he signed the Paris Declaration.
During a conference organised by the WHO European Region and the French Ministry of Health, discussions focused on mental health and its significance across all sectors and aspects of society.
Fourteen European ministers, along with representatives from 30 countries, came together to discuss plans for implementing various cross-sectoral measures aimed at reducing stigma and silence surrounding mental health challenges.

In his speech, Minister Jo Etienne Abela spoke about the recently launched National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, currently open for public consultation. He explained how this strategy combines efforts from several ministries and recommendations from 31 organisations.
He added that the initiative, developed in full collaboration with the WHO, will be officially launched following analysis of public feedback.
The Minister also addressed the role of social media, emphasising its importance in delivering clear messages about mental health awareness and available support tools. He highlighted the risks of social media misuse in spreading hatred and misinformation and expressed serious concern about children’s access to these platforms.

“I am pleased that through the Paris Declaration, our country will continue to reform community mental health services. I reaffirm the Government’s wise decision to integrate psychiatric care with physical healthcare at Mater Dei Hospital,” concluded Minister Jo Etienne Abela.
