Malta has recorded the highest number of healthy life years at birth in the European Union, according to 2023 data by Eurostat.

Maltese men are expected to live an average of 71.7 years without disability or activity limitations, while women follow closely with 71.1 years.

The EU average stands at 63.1 years, with a slight edge for women (63.3) over men (62.8). At the other end of the spectrum, Latvia reported the lowest healthy life expectancy, with 51.2 years for men and 54.3 years for women.

“Healthy life years” refers to the number of years a person is expected to live without disability — offering a clearer picture of quality of life, not just lifespan.

These results place Malta well above the EU average, reflecting strong public health outcomes and potentially more effective preventive care systems.
