Maltese Charity Organisation Wants To Cycle From Kenya To Tanzania In Just 10 Days
The LifeCycle Organisation has organized gruelling endurance challenges all over Europe and beyond for nearly two decades now, and this year’s edition promises to outdo them all. 16 Riders will be attempting to cycle from Nairobi (Kenya) to Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania), a distance of over 1,900 kilometres, in just eight days. That’ll see cyclists averaging 180 kilometres per day.
“Last year in Zambia was an incredible experience, but the terrain this time round will be even more testing,” said LC founder Alan Curry. “Cycling around Mount Kilimanjaro and through the beautiful Maasai Steppes will be hard enough, but with deviations in temperature of almost freezing at nights to 35-40 degrees during the day, a tough challenge awaits.” Yes, you heard that right. Temperatures will fluctuate from almost freezing at night to 40 degrees during the day.
No wonder the cyclists haven’t stopped training for this moment for months.
As always, all of this will be done with the aim of raising money for people suffering from renal failure, and this year marks another milestone for the organisation. “This year, the money raised will go towards an information system relating to the recipients on the waiting list for a kidney transplant,” LifeCycle explained on their official site.
This year’s LifeCycle Challenge, On The Tribal Trail, was made possible thanks to Foster Clark’s, who donated an incredibly generous €25,000. This amount will help LC with the purchasing of a renal unit. The organisation also has its sights on extending the psychological services currently being provided to patients, leasing of the Patient’s Transport van, and sponsoring patients who go to the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes.
The Foster Clark’s LifeCycle Challenge has been going strong since 1999, taking cyclists to Russia, Syria, Zambia and everywhere in between. This year’s challenge was announced back in 2016, and will be going down between the 14th and the 28th of July. Rigorous mental and physical training has been going on for months now.
