Maltese intensive care patient, Maria, has married her husband in a Palermo hospital where they celebrated a Catholic wedding rite.

The Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) said that Maria went to Sicily by helicopter a few weeks ago to undergo specialised treatment for severe myocarditis under a healthcare agreement made between the Maltese and Italian authorities.

Prior to the Catholic rite, the couple was already married in a civil ceremony, however, Maria is “profoundly religious” and her husband wanted to make it happen “as a gesture of love and hope during such a delicate time.”

The ceremony was organised by ISMETT professionals in the intensive therapy unit, guaranteeing complete clinical safety and a secure setting. Maria’s family and parish priest travelled up to Sicily for the intimate ceremony.

“It was a great joy for all the staff to see how love can give strength even in the most difficult moments,” ISMETT medical director Cinzia Di Benedetto said. “We are proud to have helped make this wish come true while ensuring maximum clinical safety.”

To signal “I do”, Maria gave a thumbs up and after the ceremony, the newlyweds and family celebrated with a specially prepared cake.

Under ISMETT’s international patient program, about 3% of its patients are foreign nationals. The collaboration agreement between Malta and Italy allows Maltese individuals to receive life-saving care at the hospital.
