Meet Gianrico Farrugia: The Maltese Director At The World’s Best Hospital

The top-ranked clinic in the US – the world, even – Mayo Clinic, is being managed by Malta’s Gianrico Farrugia. Farrugia, now at the top of the entire Mayo organisation, has led Mayo’s Florida operation since 2015… and what a journey it’s been.
A gastroenterologist, Farrugia is the president and CEO of Mayo who’s become a veteran of the top-rated institution across the last three decades.
The Professor of Physiology and Medicine started out at St. Aloysius College, where he studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics. His internship at St. Luke’s University Hospital was shortly followed by that at the Department of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Through his efforts at Mayo Clinic, Dr Farrugia worked his way up the scales, progressing from a resident to a fellow-clinical investigator and later immersing himself into a research fellowship, alongside Dr. J.H. Szurszewski and Dr. J.L. Rae.
The Maltese Director also filled the role of consultant in different departments within the clinic, and served as President of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society.
The lab Dr Farrugia runs forms part of the Enteric Neuroscience Program at Mayo Clinic. His work mainly focuses on “how the normal functions of the gastrointestinal tract determine the defects that result in diseases such as diabetic gastroparesis, slow transit constipation and irritable bowel syndrome,” according to Mayo Clinic.
“For me, as a physician growing up on a tiny island in the Mediterranean, to be asked to be CEO of Mayo Clinic is profound,” Farrugia had said of his incredible achievement. “It’s an honour. And it’s something I really don’t take for granted.”
