Health Ministry and Maypole Join Forces To Raise Mental Health Awareness In The Community
In honour of World Mental Health Day the Ministry for Health and Active Aging, in collaboration with Maypole, has launched an initiative aimed at raising mental health awareness in the community.
Thousands of reusable bags featuring the message “Going through a difficult time? Call 1579” will be distributed across Maypole stores, encouraging those struggling to seek help.
Minister for Health and Active Aging, Jo Etienne Abela, emphasised the importance of this initiative, noting that since the helpline 1579 was launched, it has received over 16,000 calls.
“We welcome collaborations with the private sector to continue raising awareness about mental health in every possible way,” Abela said.
He added that mental health is a government priority, stressing the need to reduce the stigma associated with it. The minister highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to integrate mental health services into the community, making support more accessible to those in need.
“We want everyone who requires mental health support to reach out through the 1579 helpline, where professionals are available 24/7 to offer assistance. Together, we can break the stigma surrounding mental health,” the minister concluded.
Maypole’s Director, Sebastian Debono, explained that the initiative is expected to reach around 60,000 people through the company’s 29 stores around Malta and Gozo.
Debono explained that Maypole views its customers as part of a larger community and acknowledges that anyone can experience difficult times. He emphasised the importance of reminding people that support is available and encouraging them to reach out when needed.
In addition to the bags, the mental health awareness message will also be displayed on screens in all Maypole stores starting from Monday 7th October.
This initiative is part of Maypole’s broader commitment to supporting the well-being of the community beyond the sale of products.
