Malta’s healthcare system is about to get a significant boost with the launch of a brand-new Gastroenterology and Immunology Department at Mater Dei Hospital.

The announcement came from Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela during a conference for specialists in surgery and radiology at the hospital.

The new department, set to open its doors in the coming days, is part of broader reforms aimed at modernising medical services in Malta.

The focus will be on treating digestive system diseases, particularly inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

“These conditions require specialised and focused care, and the government recognised that a dedicated department would offer the modern and targeted treatment these patients need,” said Minister Abela.

But that’s not all—this new department is not just about treating chronic conditions. It will also expand screening services for polyps and colorectal cancer, which means that more people could be eligible for early detection programmes.

The department’s specialists will also be on hand for emergency cases involving internal bleeding.

The immunology side of the department is set to tackle allergic conditions that impact thousands of Maltese residents. With allergies on the rise, this addition to Mater Dei’s services couldn’t come at a better time.

“By combining the expertise of the Gastroenterology, Surgery, and Radiology Departments, this new unit will provide a holistic approach to patient care,” Minister Abela explained.

“We are not only investing in our human resources but also in equipment and infrastructure, all aimed at offering better healthcare for patients in Malta and Gozo.”

This development marks yet another step towards improving Malta’s healthcare system, offering patients quicker access to specialist care and a more streamlined approach to treatment.
