Pharmacists Urged To Advise Patients To Cease Use Of Vitamin D Supplement ‘FOLIDI’

Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci has issued an urgent call to all pharmacists to advise patients prescribed or supplied with “FOLIDI” to immediately discontinue its use.
This followed a precautionary notice issued by the Environmental Health Directorate strongly advising people not to consume the product.
FOLIDI – a Vitamin D supplement – was found to contain much higher levels of Vitamin D than declared on the label. Excessive intake of vitamin D can lead to potential health risks, particularly if consumed over a prolonged period.
Therefore, consumers were advised not to take FOLIDI and that those in possession of the supplement may return it to the pharmacy from which it was purchased.
Pharmacists were further told to instruct patients to to contact the Malta National Poisons Centre at 1774 (available Monday to Sunday, 8am to 8pm) for medical advice, regardless of symptoms or the duration since discontinuing the supplement.
Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation to assess the extent of the issue.
