‘Providing Wigs To Cancer Patients’: President Visits MFFC Oncology Centre
President George Vella visited the office of The Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF) at the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (SAMOC).
“The MCCF started the service of providing wigs to cancer patients in November 2015. Last year, 80 patients benefited from this service, and since the start of this year, it already provided 74 wigs,” read the statement.
The President and his wife were accompanied by Health Minister Chris Fearne, and the Chairman of the Board of Administrators of MCCF John Huber – as they were informed about the services provided in supplying wigs.
The organisation offers real hair wigs to individuals who are experiencing hair loss as a result of cancer.
Last year, the MCCF received 814 hair donations, and more than 340 have been made so far in 2023.
Here’s how you can donate hair:
- Hair must be healthy, not bleached, and not shorter than 30 centimetres.
- Hair must be cut dry
- Place the hair in kitchen paper or a paper bag together with the name and address of the donor
- Send by post to The Malta Community Chest Fund, Office of the President, The Palace, Valletta, VLT 1115
Afterwards, the hair undergoes a thorough cleansing and is sorted based on color, type, and length by a professional hairdresser. Once sorted, the hair is exported abroad.
This entire process typically spans around twelve to fifteen weeks.
The hair can also be delivered personally to one of the MCCF offices:
- Valletta – 65, Old Mint Street (from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 15:00) (Temporary office until the restoration project in the Presidential Palace is completed)
- SAMOC – Level -1, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 13:00)
- Gozo – third floor, The Brokerage, Santa Marta Street, Victoria (from Monday to Friday between 15:00 and 18:00)
President Vella thanked all the professionals who work there, remarking how this small yet impactful mission might alleviate some of the pain and suffering caused by a ravaging illness.
