The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has launched a consultation document on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), which includes a policy framework for the prevention of these diseases.

At the launch, Minister Jo Etienne Abela, explained that Non Communicable Diseases are long-term illnesses that are not transmitted from person to person.

The consultation document includes key measures to facilitate the fight against these types of diseases, such as: reducing tobacco use; reducing alcohol consumption; reducing overweight and obesity; promoting healthy eating; increasing physical activity; earlier diagnosis; and promoting mental health and well-being.

Minister Abela emphasised that addressing these types of diseases is a national priority. He added that this strategy aims to foster collaboration and coordination between sectors and stakeholders, leading to improved health and well-being of the population.

He noted that these diseases are responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide. “Through this document, we are continuing our efforts to prevent these types of diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, obesity, and diabetes, among others, which will lead to a healthier life,” concluded Minister Abela.

The public consultation is open from 27th June to 23rd August, 2024. The Consultation Document can be accessed here.
