Record-Breaking Year For Surgeries At Gozo General Hospital

The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has announced a significant increase in the number of procedures and surgeries performed at Gozo General Hospital over the past year.
In 2024, the hospital recorded an all-time high of 5,529 interventions—marking a 14% increase compared to 2023. This growth aligns with the rise in procedures and surgeries carried out at Mater Dei Hospital during the same period.

Minister Jo Etienne Abela attributed this achievement to continued investment in human resources, with more Gozitan nurses, midwives and radiographers now working on the island.
Additionally, the number of specialist surgeons has risen to 15. Further investment in radiology has enhanced services, with four specialist radiologists and state-of-the-art equipment now available. Meanwhile, primary care and screening services continue to diagnose various conditions, including breast and colorectal cancer.

“The government remains committed to providing top-tier medical services free of charge to Gozitan and Maltese citizens while also improving working conditions for dedicated healthcare professionals,” Minister Abela affirmed.
He also expressed gratitude to all hospital staff for their dedication in ensuring that patients receive high-quality care. “I look forward to the development of two new operating theatres at the hospital, which will provide even more space for additional procedures,” Dr Abela concluded.
