Free Menstrual Products Will Be Offered In Schools To ‘Eliminate Stigma Surrounding Menstruation’

The government has recently announced that during the upcoming academic year, menstrual products will be made available to secondary school girls.

“We want to eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation and teach people that this is a natural process,” Junior Minister Rebecca Buttigieg said.

A trial phase will be conducted in a few selected schools prior to implementing the pilot project in all schools.

Earlier this year, KSU (Kunsill Studenti Universitarji) introduced a project at the University of Malta campus where they placed a locker in the girl’s bathroom filled with menstrual products.

Buttigieg expressed that this initiative aims to reduce gender inequality and eliminate the stigma associated with menstruation.

The government is also considering the option of reducing the VAT on menstrual products to the “lowest possible rate”. This reaffirms a commitment made in the previous year. Currently, these products are subject to the standard VAT rate of 18%.

Some other countries have already accomplished this, and Malta is finally coming through.
